In the beginning, Kurogane used to hate it when he asked Fai questions and Fai would remain silent with that infuriating fake smile on his lips. He used to think he'd never be able to trust Fai when he asked him "Why? Why don't you answer me?" and Fai would be silent still, but his eyes would say 'I don't want to tell you.'
There was a time, somewhere between hopping worlds and brushing with death every other Wednesday, when something changed. Kurogane didn't hate it any less when Fai would dodge his questions, but Fai didn't smile his plastic smiles anymore. He used to think then, that he might be able to like Fai when he asked him "Why?" and Fai would be just as silent, but his eyes, dark and sad and skittish, would say 'I can't tell you. Please, I can't.'
Now, Kurogane doesn't ask questions anymore, and Fai has to force fewer smiles. Sometimes, though, Kurogane looks at Fai in the dark and silently thinks "Why?" Fai's eyes will meet his unflinchingly, without hesitation, and answer, 'I can't. Not yet. But soon,' and Kurogane thinks then, that it is safe to love him.
